Ants

Winged ants are sometimes confused with winged termites. Ants have a constricted body that makes them appear to have a very small waist in proportion to their body. Termites have a wider waist. Winged queens and workers have elbowed antennae. Termites don’t. Winged ants have smaller rear wings than front wings, while termite wings are the same size.

Ant colonies are made of individuals with defined duties that include a queen, sterile female workers, and a small number of males, kept for mating purposes.

A queen will set up a colony of ants close to a food source. Preferably this is outside near trees or plants where honeydew-producing insects (aphids, mealybugs and soft scales) live. The ants may literally farm and protect those insects. They will invade a home, restaurant, hospital, office, warehouse or any other building that contains food (sweets, fats and meat), water and offers protection from the extremes of the weather. Keeping dishes washed (or rinsed in the dishwasher), putting attractive foods in the refrigerator or clean, sealed containers and removing trash will reduce the temptation for ants to establish a colony inside. Ants leave scent trails so that the workers can return to food sources. Colonies are normally discovered when you see workers using these trails. These areas should be thoroughly cleaned.

Colonies can be located in walls, under your foundation and in your lawn. Caulking the points of entry will reduce the likelihood of an ant (and rodent) invasion. ATG Pest Control provides this service. Keep water sources away from the building and fix leaky faucets, indoors and out. Plants, grasses and mulch should be kept away from the building as they form attractive areas for a nest and a bridge into the building.
