Spiders

There are nearly 3,400 species of spiders in the United States. There was a study of the effects of city living on spiders that indicated that spiders have readily, if not eagerly, adapted to urban areas. They prefer warmer environments, as provided by city living, have an easier means of finding food because insects congregate around city and home lights and are more prolific in the well-cared for urban landscape. The improved environment usually results in an increase in the spider population.

There are a lot of common spiders found in the home environment, including the Common House spider, responsible for many of the webs you find indoors, Jumping spiders that, as their name infers, jump around, Cellar spiders, better known as “Daddy-Long-Legs”, and the hunter known as the Wolf spider that chases down its prey. These spiders are considered nuisance spiders. Of greater concern are the Brown Recluse and Black Widow spiders, as they are both poisonous. The Brown Recluse is also called a Violin or Fiddle-back spider thanks to the brown spot shaped like a violin on its back. It likes to hide in cedar shake roofs, boxes and inside furniture.

Spider bites can produce redness and swelling but severe necrosis really only occurs in about ten percent of bites.
