Ladybugs

collection of 22 spot ladybird in different positions

Ladybugs come in a variety of colorful pok- a-dot attire, including yellow, orange, red, black, gray and brown. They are found throughout the world with over four hundred and fifty species found in the United States. Unfortunately, the introduction of the yellow/orange and even black colored species such as the Harmonia axyridis is a larger coccinellid beetle that has spread throughout the United States and displaced the true red American ladybug.

They are known, among other names as Ladybugs, ladybirds, Marybeetle and Ladycows. Correctly, they are insects, not bugs as their mouths are not designed for sucking, which is a commonality shared by true bugs. Instead, they eat aphids, other scale insects and some species consume mites. Many species seem to specialize in their prey diet. Not true carnivores, they also eat plant material and have preferences for such gourmet items as honeydew, pollen, nectar and some fungi.

They are normally oval in shape with six very short legs with spotted, striped and plain shells

Unfortunately, a rather common mythos about the ladybug is untrue. The number of spots bear no relation to its age.

Ladybugs enter diapause in the winter and can often be seen swarming on the south sides of houses during the fall and winter. They leave as the longer hours of light appear in the spring.
