ATG Pest Control - TickTicks

First reported in 1977 in the USA, Lyme disease is a very real concern as soon as Spring arrives. It is caused by bacteria (Borrelia burgdorferi) which is carried by blacklegged ticks and a few others. Symptoms include a bull’s eye rash or other rashes, fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and fatigue. Some patients do not develop a rash. Ticks that carry Lyme disease are also known to carry Theileria microti and Anaplasma phagocytophilum parasites, which cause babesiosis and human granulocytic anaplasmosis.

It is important to quickly remove a tick if you are bitten. The bacteria moves from the tick’s gut to its salivary gland and is then transmitted to the host. This takes some time. So the sooner the tick is removed, the better. If a tick bites you, it is suggested that you remove the tick and place it in a jar so that it can be identified. If it is a blacklegged (also known as a deer tick) it can be tested for Borrelia burgdorferi.

Ticks are also a common problem for your pets. Be certain to examine them when they return to the home as ticks can hide in their fur.

Ticks are most commonly found in rural or wooded suburban areas, especially where there is an abundance of wildlife.
